A lot of bad things can happen to a mobile device. Loss, theft, accidents, careless damage--the list is long and seems to keep getting longer. The events on this list are bad news, but there is a corresponding list of things that the enterprise IT staff can do to keep the worst things from happening to good mobile devices. When it comes to protecting the information that lives on the device, there are a number of steps that can be taken to protect against specific dangers. Authentication through biometrics, smart cards, or other multi-factor methods makes sure that users are who they say they are. Encryption can help ensure that private data stays private, even if the device is stolen. There are a variety of tools available [1] to encrypt key files or entire disks. The risks to mobile devices are real--the excuses for not protecting them are getting more illusory by the day.
