All VoIP, all the time

Get ready for a slew of announcements about new Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) tools and services coming from vendors this month. There's such a wave of technology coming that analysts are calling it "boom times" in VoIP services. EarthLink is beta testing a free VoIP service that will link users to any other Internet-connected VoIP phone, and Adomo's first product is a voice-mail system that meshes with Microsoft's messaging platform. What's the reason for the product onslaught? Well, if current adoption statistics are to be believed, it's all about meeting customer demand and expectation. An Infonetics study reports that 40 percent of today's broadband customers are expected to grab VoIP services as well -- over 24 million potential users.
