Old technology pushes new digital data capabilities

Typically we'll feature a product item in this section, but there's a great article detailing how one hospital is using wireless optical, which has helped increase productivity, data safety and security and boost the bottom line. New York's Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center began deploying optical wireless a few years back, using LightPointe as a backup link between two buildings. The technology, which provides transmission speeds of 1 Gbps, is letting the medical facility share data between locations at higher speeds and at lower costs than previous networking solutions. It's not a new tool by any means, having been developed over 40 years ago, but the line-of-sight technology, which utilizes light beams as a primary data path, is getting new respect. It's easy to deploy and support. Yet as some analysts note, it could be quickly replaced once WiMax actually hits the enterprise.
