RIM: Qwerty keyboards all the rage

Speaking with a reporter sometime during the WES 2008 event last week, RIM co-CEO Mike Lazaridis shared some of his views pertaining to the increasing ubiquitous smartphone. When it comes to the touchscreen, which received a shot in the arm from Apple's implementation on the iPhone, Lazaridis noted that he has used numerous touchscreen devices since the mid-90s--including the very first ones found on devices from Sharp, NEC and Palm.

He was unanimous that a full Qwerty keyboard is still "the most exciting mobile trend" to date. More than email alone, the Facebook and instant messaging generation are likely to walk away from a shop with a BlackBerry as a direct result of its superior keyboard interface. Lazaridis said, "What I watched was the whole industry eventually had to license our keyboard technology."

Windows Mobile 7: coming late 2009?

We've been hearing about Windows Mobile 7 for quite some time now, heck, we've even seen a few leaked screenshots. Despite these facts, the next step for Windows Mobile (not counting 6.1, of course) has always seemed a bit far off and that point was underlined this past week when a few journalists were lucky enough to get their hands on the new OS at a Microsoft MVP event. In a blog post that has since been redacted (apparently some folks mistook informed speculation for fact), PocketNow detailed its experience with WinMo7, which is said to "basically [address] everything wrong with WM6 today." The problem, however, is that based on target release dates, we might not see the new OS until "mid to late 2009." That gives Apple, RIM, Palm and Symbian yet another year to make inroads into the enterprise market while Microsoft sits on the sidelines. This really can't be helped, however: unlike the closed ecosystem that is the iPhone, Windows Mobile relies on a vast network of OEM, carrier and developer partners, who will need months to test, embed and develop for the new OS before it can go out the door. That is, unless, Microsoft leveraged a recent purchase in order to produce its own native mobile hardware... but that, of course, is just wild speculation.

The end of desktop browsers?

For nearly 15 years, the Internet has been defined by the words and graphics that show up in World Wide Web browser windows. Mosaic, Mozilla, Internet Explorer, Safari, Opera, Firefox, and more have come to be the interfaces through which users meet the information stored on the Internet. With the rise of smartphones and mobile Internet devices, however, desktop browsers may have finally hit the end of their long run at the top of the Internet heap. Research into the way people are using portable devices to reach the Internet indicates that shifts are happening, but they're shifts from desktop and laptop browsers to wireless device browsers that bring a rich browsing experience into the palm of the user's hand.

Features win in wireless competition

We've been conditioned to think of wireless market competition as something that takes place between large network carriers, but it's more accurate to think about competition between carriers and mixed product and service vendors like RIM with its Blackberry devices and email network. The success of companies like RIM, Apple, and Palm as they build new features and capabilities into products, are indicative of demands customers continue to place on vendors--and on the success innovative companies are finding in the market.

More delays for Palm Linux

Now that the Palm Foleo is history (or is it?), the highly-anticipated Palm Linux device is just around the corner, right? Maybe not. Originally slated to debut on Palm's lower-end devices by the end of this year, the Linux version of the Palm OS first slipped to "sometime next year" and is now promised "by the end of next year." Since most enterprise customers are embracing Windows Mobile Treo devices, the Linux software is aimed at consumers and individual buyers--who'll just have to wait for an update for some time.

HTC's laptop smartphone

Wireless-device manufacturer HTC isn't stopping with an iPhone-like smart phone. No, they've just introduced an ultra-portable laptop-style smartphone that could just be the single mobile digital companion you've been looking for. The HTC isn't cheap at $900, but it is less expensive and far more portable than a messenger bag full of different devices. Palm pulled the plug on the Foleo, but HTC doesn't think the concept is over.
