WiMAX plans are popping up all over, and Clearwire has become the latest to go public with details of its broadband-over-WiMAX offering. With a flat monthly fee for high-speed access anywhere within a metropolitan area, the Clearwire plan joins those of other vendors (like Clearwire partner Sprint), as the next wave of Internet access begins.

Wireless email coming to planes?

You can't make cell phone calls from commercial airline flights, but keeping up with your email could be just around the corner. Rockwell Collins and Arinc have joined forces to develop a system initially targeted at the private jet market. The 3.5 Mbps service is available in the skies over North America and Europe, and Arinc says that rolling it out over other continents shouldn't be difficult in any technical sense. According to some reports there have already been inquiries about moving the technology to commercial flights. At 70 pounds, the equipment is light enough to make the fuel-conscious airlines comfortable. It won't bring back meal service, but broadband might just make that long flight just a little more productive.

For more on air-borne broadband:
- read the article at InformationWeek

Step through the on-device portal

You know all about the portals of the Web--those Googles, Yahoos, MSNs and other major sites through which so much traffic flows. They're grand for workstations tethered to a broadband or high-speed connection, but what about the growing number of users with a smart phone as their Internet device? An on-device portal (ODP) can enhance the communications and computing experience for users, but these portable portals are still in the early stages of deployment and development. Will an on-device portal be the tool your enterprise needs to keep users productive as they switch to ever-more portable platforms?

For more on ODPs:
Read the analysis at WirelessWeek.
