We get to see both sides of the maturity curve this week. Demo 07, the conference where companies pitch their newest products, had a heavy wireless contingent with a lot of companies eager to bring new products and services to the most portable platforms. That's great news. At the same time, we're beginning to see a market emerging in which customers demand high speed and great services, rather than the simple existence of a capability. That's still great, but makes life harder for you when you have to choose partners. Finally, the malware horde of Trojans, worms and viruses is beginning to invade the wireless world in a more serious way, and the anti-virus companies are noticing. It's a product category that you'd love not to need. Put them all together, though, and the signs are clear that wireless platforms are becoming more important as enterprise tools, and that's ultimately a very good thing for all of us. -Curtis

Well, the predictions we started hearing late last year--that the mobile environment would be the next battleground of attack by worm writers, hackers and virus makers--is actually bearing truth a lot sooner that most of us thought. In fact, when I read over analyst reports from a few months ago, they figured it would take a year or so; but this week brings the big headline that Trojans, specifically created to break through mobile networks and devices, are here. It's a bit scary given that many IT organizations still have their hands full educating desktop PC users to help the enterprise stay secure.

Now with nearly every mobile professional boasting a PDA or other handheld in their pocket or briefcase, that effort has to triple. Given many IT leaders are looking to start developing mobile applications, security is a greater focus even before deployment takes place. Write me and let me know if you're ready to put more attention on wireless security and any advice you may have for colleagues, and I'll be happy to share it here next week. - Judy
