Carry-on APs

Everyone is trying to pack lighter these days, so what are the odds you can convince your employees to add a wireless access point to their load when heading out on a business trip? If they're serious about wireless security, then the odds could go up. Aruba Networks has developed a portable AP designed to work with a hotel's daily Internet access. The unit, which plugs into the available network port, offers authentication and encryption through a VPN tunnel back to the corporate shop. Now, if it could only keep employees from leaving laptops in the back seat of a cab…

For more on the portable AP:
- read the technology news at NetworkWorld

Symantec's new mobile security

Symantec has licensed a set of software tools from Bluefire--a set of tools intended to make wireless mobile computing as secure as internal-cabled workstations. Bluefire Mobile is a suite of applications that includes authentication and encryption, a firewall, and an intrusion prevention service. The suite, which supports Windows Mobile devices up to Windows Mobile 5, is inter-operable with the Bluefire Mobile VPN and can be configured to protect devices on an application-by-application basis. Basic licensing begins at $50 per device, with availability beginning this week.

For more on the new Symantec product:
- Read the full news story at Network World

Security front line shifts again

The word has gotten out: finding corporate networks not protected by multiple layers of firewalls, intrusion detection systems and intrusion prevention systems has become far more difficult. Criminals and thieves, having found that the full frontal assault is bearing less fruit, have shifted the focus of their attacks to systems and locations less well-protected. Where's the new front in hacking? Mobile, wireless, and home systems that may be less secure, but that still use a VPN to reach back inside the corporate firewall. If you have users logging in from afar, it's time to make sure that their client hardware is as protected as you want your servers to be.

For more on the newest front:
- read the article at Enterprise IT Planet
