New version of Opera browser for phones

The war over which will become the preferred browser on mobile devices hasn't been quite as hot as the browser battle on the desktop, but it may well be heating up with the introduction of the latest version of the Opera Mini browser for mobile platforms that support Java. The new version, like Microsoft's DeepFish, displays an entire page in miniature on the device screen. Unlike DeepFish, however, the image is the page, on which the user can zoom to any spot, rather than a thumbnail image. Let the battle begin.

Microsoft Deepfish swims to trial

A wireless mobile device's screen is a small, inconvenient window into web pages designed for large, wide-screen monitors. Technologies like WAP have tried to re-shape web sites to fit the small screen. This week Microsoft Labs announced Deepfish, a new mobile device browser that delivers a thumbnail of the full page with the ability to zoom in to pieces of the site that are of particular interest. Deepfish has entered trials, with no estimated date given for release. When it is released, it will enter a market with deep interest in mobile browsers like Mobile Opera. Both browsers promise increased functionality at critical web sites for those entering the Internet from a mobile platform. Neither require site providers to re-code their sites for the small screen. The combination promises to keep web users on the run, and that's the way they want it.

For more on Deepfish:
- read the article from CIO Today
- and this article in DailyTechRag

Cingular shrinks the phone even smaller

How small can today's cell phones get? Smaller obviously given the latest Cingular phone that's hit the market. While currently limited to users of Cingular's GoPhone prepaid wireless service, the Pantech C300 is just a minute 2.72 inches tall, 1.69 inches wide and three quarters of an inch thick with the flip closed. The new camera's features include a color screen and camera with flash and zoom. While smaller may be better for mobile warriors, the price tag is still a bit high at just over a $100 bucks. Article
