iPhone out as enterprise device?

It's coming. Apple's iPhone will hit the market this week, and it's a big event--AT&T has added 2,000 employees to handle the anticipated rush. The Big Deal for consumers may be No Deal for the enterprise: Gartner says it's prepared to recommend its customers not allow iPhones into the network. Why the enterprise-class antipathy? A lack of enterprise application capabilities and the possibility of serious security problems are combining to make corporate IT professionals cautious at best. How will you and your company deal with the iPhone? Your time for pre-release decision-making is drawing short.

In the world of high technology, we get to play that game out in real life more often than do the inhabitants of most other commercial realms. Scientists and engineers push forward with new technologies, we talk to vendors about what we want to buy, and the vendors rush (or crawl, in some cases) to put our desires into product form. With new technologies coming rapidly in the wireless space, now is a good time to be playing the "If I ran the world" game. Talk to your users and staff about what they need in a wireless platform and push the vendors hard to get your needed features into a product that you want to buy. Now is the right time to have the conversations--not later, after products that only sort-of meet your needs have come to market. It starts, of course, with figuring out exactly what you need--and if I ran the world that would be a far easier process than it already is. -Curtis

There's been a big push on in the past year of so to provide wireless connectivity, specifically WiFi, during airplane flights. Initial much-hyped projects are now being scuttled, and the only company currently running such a service is talking about shutting it down. But others are jumping up to take their place, and as a USA Today article points out, you won't be accessing such services until next year at the earliest and you'll likely have to pay top dollar just as current users do on the 10 airlines that Internet access is offered.

While I guess it'd be a great thing to have if needed, I think most of us are slightly relieved that we aren't connected during flight travel time. While productivity would be boosted if we could email and make calls during travel, there's nothing wrong with shutting everything down for a few hours and rejuvenating your mind with some music or even actual conversation with a fellow traveler. So, I guess I'm hoping this technology rush continues to slow down a bit.
