Shhh! Paint stops RF

Some of the same properties that make radio frequency communications so valuable--the abilities to cover relatively large distances and ignore walls and barriers--can make managing RF coverage difficult. Now EM-SEC Technologies says that its EM-SEC Coating will keep radio-frequency energy from penetrating a space that has been painted with the substance. EM-SEC developed the coating in response to the needs of the military and various government agencies that aren't supposed to really exist. For commercial customers, uses can include adding physical security to wireless networks, shielding control environments from operations RF, and segregating wireless network subnets. Now if it could just keep teenagers from text-messaging during dinner…

For more on RF-shielding coatings:
- read more at the EM-SEC website

Small devices make big security holes

Just because your mobile device uses a different operating system than your database server doesn't mean that malware and attacks can't move from your handheld to your server. As the number of highly mobile devices has grown, the attacks through those devices have kept pace. Software protection suites for smart phones, PDAs and other mobile wireless devices are now available and should be deployed on every corporate device. File encryption (for every file on the device) and user training for safe use and physical security are additional measures that should be a part of the total corporate security plan.

For more on protecting your wireless devices:
- read the article at ComputerWorld

How to choose the best VoIP security service

With a recent report indicating how advanced Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) capabilities when it comes to integrating voice with data in the next five years, the issue of security will continue to dominate the 'to-do' list for tech leaders. That's a primary driver pushing vendors to launch new security services and tools for enterprises jumping on the VoIP network bandwagon. There's such a slew of new options it can be a bit arduous determining which security approach is best, however. The first wave of choices features security assessment tools, which allow network managers to analyze network system architecture, business continuity plans and policies. Vendors are continually adding to the feature set providing scorecards on results, testing of hardware and firewall review. Some other services, such as Lucent's, even test the physical security of rooms where network hardware sits. Get a good look at what some other vendors and telcom providers are adding to their VoIP security solutions. Article
