If you ever have a problem with managing multiple smartphones that users demand be allowed to connect to your corporate email server, then perhaps you should consider taking a look at the InterNoded Mobile Device Manager (IMDM). The IMDM is the only solution on the market that can manage devices based on the BlackBerry, Windows Mobile and Good Messaging platforms, all from within the same system. While I have not yet had the chance to actually try out the software, the slides and screenshots I've seen have shown a comprehensive administrative interface where the user is able to provision their device of choice via a simple self-service portal. While other features, such as password resets and device wipes, can be found on the latest versions of Windows Mobile and server-side software for the BlackBerry, IMDM offers a consistent interface and platform to do it. On the administrative end, the consistent interface also makes defining IT policies across various smartphone platforms a breeze.

Just like nobody could have imagined the ubiquity that the humble email would eventually grow to enjoy when it was first invented, it's hard to believe how mobile devices can now be used to send and receive emails, among other capabilities. Indeed, standard consumer-grade mobile phones from manufacturers such as Nokia, Motorola and LG are now capable of connecting with Exchange servers as well as other email providers while on the go. Jason Guesmann, of mobile messaging software provider Seven, summed it up best when he noted, "The technology is here, the phones are there, and the customer demand is there." What other technologies do you reckon will make their way into our smartphones and other handheld gadgets?

With the advent of yet another Palm Treo device, it's not hard to believe analysts when they predict that one quarter of all wireless handsets will be either PDA or smartphone devices in just five years. The Treo 680, which will be available through Cingular, is a quad-band phone with a very inexpensive price tag--just under $200. A good smartphone choice for the business world

Vendors keep pushing new and improved smartphone devices to the market. One is the Nokia E61 smartphone which could prove to be a good choice for the business enterprise. It boasts strong battery life, but maybe more importantly, it combines WiFi with cellular links making it a big contender to use low-cost mobile VoIP. While it's a little large and hefty, it's a great mobile messaging tool thanks to an intelligent keyboard layout. The software connection is easy and connectivity stability is impressive. Palm debuts latest Treo

For something with a hefty price tag ($500) you'd expect more features and functionality. But Palm's latest version of the Treo, this one called the Treo 700wx, doesn't seem to impress industry analysts, many of whom call the device's upgrades "negligible" and say that the most important feature upgrade is the increase in memory. The 700wx is essentially a handset running the Windows Mobile operating system, Pocket PC Phone Edition. Despite the criticism, the device's familiar user interface will be enticing for business users, as will the speedy file download ability, e-mail via Windows Mobile Messaging and Security Feature Pack.
