New version of Opera browser for phones

The war over which will become the preferred browser on mobile devices hasn't been quite as hot as the browser battle on the desktop, but it may well be heating up with the introduction of the latest version of the Opera Mini browser for mobile platforms that support Java. The new version, like Microsoft's DeepFish, displays an entire page in miniature on the device screen. Unlike DeepFish, however, the image is the page, on which the user can zoom to any spot, rather than a thumbnail image. Let the battle begin.

Minimo 0.2 hits the market

Millions of users depend on a Mozilla browser for reaching web sites. Now,
users of Windows Mobile wireless devices can take advantage of the latest
version of Mozilla for mobile--Minimo 0.2 has been released. The Minimo project,
while not controlled by Mozilla, is hosted on Mozilla.org. The Minimo browser
was one of the early third-party mobile browsers, though other projects have
received more attention from the press and users in recent months. Now, project
members question whether financial support from companies like Nokia will
continue in the face of competition from projects like the Opera
mobile browser. Fans of choice are hoping for more competition and more
options for mobile browsing in the future.

Windows Mobile 6 doesn't go far

The latest version of Windows Mobile is an improvement over version 5, but doesn't carry the major user interface or functional core changes that might have been expected in an X.0 revision. Instead, it brings incremental improvements in many aspects, new names for the different versions, and the ability for SmartPhone (now Mobile Standard) users to view and edit Microsoft Office documents on their portable devices. These are all good, if occasionally confusing, steps, but they leave opportunities for considerable improvement in upgrades yet to come.

For more on the new version of Windows Mobile:
- read the review at eWeek

Palm debuts latest Treo

For something with a hefty price tag ($500) you'd expect more features and functionality. But Palm's latest version of the Treo, this one called the Treo 700wx, doesn't seem to impress industry analysts, many of whom call the device's upgrades "negligible" and say that the most important feature upgrade is the increase in memory. The 700wx is essentially a handset running the Windows Mobile operating system, Pocket PC Phone Edition. Despite the criticism, the device's familiar user interface will be enticing for business users, as will the speedy file download ability, e-mail via Windows Mobile Messaging and Security Feature Pack. Review
